About MAN |

A Brief History of MAN
MAN came into being in early 1994 through the efforts of a group of local men who sought to provide a safe space for men to find support with the crisis’s and life issues they were experiencing. Initially a group of about 12 men meet only as a weekly self-help support group and in 1996 they took the step of constituting MAN as a charity. The aim of MAN is to Support and Promote the Health and Well-being of Males throughout the North West of Ireland and beyond by offering advice, counselling and support in a range of issues such as Men's Health Education and Health Promotion, and MAN’s objectives are to;
· Stimulate the growth of community self-help initiatives among men in the North-West Area
· Facilitate communication between men on issues relating to their health, well-being and changing role in society and to helping establish such facilities/services deemed necessary.
· Seek to create new services to meet the current emotional, physical and mental health needs of men.
· Seek to create pre-emptive support as well as active response to men experiencing crisis.
· Provide information on issues relating directly to men's health and well- being.
· Help promote the holistic well - being of society through the participation of men in self- help groups which foster respect for both men and women equally.
· Work in conjunction with women's organisations and other relevant groups towards mutual understanding, social inclusion and equality.
MAN’s first found a home at 6 Shipquay Street where we stayed for about 10 years and we had a happy home here until the start of 2007 when we moved to new ground floor premises at 2 Dacre Terrace. Our new ground floor base offers MAN the platform for further development of our community based initiatives and support services to men throughout the North West . We offer proactive support to men in time of crisis and/or, whenever an identified need requires , safe spaces to explore, voice and gain insight to the many life issues men face today. One core element of our work is addressing the isolation men feel, isolation which in times of crisis can lead to serious life consequences like addiction, depression, and in some extreme instances suicide. Fundamental to our work is prevention which helps underpin the development of MAN’s holistic interventions that recognise and support males emotional, physical, mental , spiritual , social life experiences , health and well being.
